This week’s meeting will be back in our new meeting place on the Church Campus (Teen Activity Room). We’ll be starting on our First Aid Meetings lead this week by Isaac.

Also we will be supporting our CubScout Troop with their Crossover Ceremony tomorrow. I’ll be asking a few volunteers to help with building, maintaining and extinguishing a fire for the ceremony. If you are interested in helping, or need fire building for rank advancement please be at the meeting a little earlier – about 6:30-6:45.

This is a reminder that this week’s meeting will be held at the White Chocolate Grill Restaurant in Scottsdale. It is located at 7000 E Mayo Blvd (bear the corner of Mayo Blvd and N Scottsdale Rd. It should be a fun event for the Scouts to get a look at the behind the scenes happenings in a busy city restaurant. Please have the Scouts there no later than 6:30, so we can be respectful of the time and generosity of the owner. There will be food provided to the Scouts, so bring them hungry. See you all this week.

Just a quick reminder that we’ll be having our PLC meeting at 6:00 tomorrow in the “New Scout Meeting Room”, also known as the Teen Activity Center. Following the Meeting there will be a speaker from Not My Kid which will take place in the Choir Room (which will probably still smell of delicious pancakes). I will not be able to attend the meetings, but Dr Komar has volunteered to fill in. Have a great week everyone

Hello Scouts and Scouters!

Scouts, are you looking for a fun summer job where you can gain experience as a leader and be a role model to young Scouts? Parents, are you looking for some peace and quiet in your house for this summer?  The Cub Scout Camp Directors are currently seeking additional Scouts to staff at the Cub Scout Summer Day Camp at the Heard Scout Pueblo, as well as Camp R-C Cub Scout Family Residential Camp in Payson!

For Scouts 16 and above, these are paid positions, including room and board.  For Scouts aged 14-15, Counselor in Training staff positions do not receive financial compensation but do receive room and board.  Camp R-C also has a Den Chief/Junior Staff program where 12 to 13-year-old Scouts and a parent can volunteer for a session and see what it is like to work at summer camp while gaining experience for future summers!

There is a preference for Staff that is available for the entire program, although if a staff member must leave early to join their Troop for camp or another opportunity, the Camp Directors may be able to work that into the staff schedule.

Cub Scout Day Camp

Dates:  May 30 – June 15, plus set up and take down dates before and after camp.

Day Camp runs from 3:00-8:30, Monday through Saturday, with set up and take down time each day.

Staff in valley will be able to go home each day while working in the afternoons and evenings over the three-week period.

Available positions:

·         1 Arts and crafts Director (age 16+)

·         1 Games Director (age 16+)

·         2 Staff in Games (ages 14+)

Camp R-C Residential Camp

Dates: May 31 – June 23, plus set up and take down time.

Camp runs one to two sessions weekly, Scouts stay at camp during and between sessions.

Available positions:

·         1 Staff  Nature Lodge (age 16+)

·         1 Staff Trading Post(age 16+)

·         1 Staff BB’s Shooting Sports (age 16+)

·         1 Staff Archery (age 16+)

·         1 Asst. Climbing Tower Instructor (age +18)

·         Counselors in Training (ages 14-15) positions available for any areas that Scouts are interested in.

·         Den Chiefs/Junior Staff (ages 11-13 with a parent) roles are available for every session. 

Camp R-C is unique in that it has a Den Chief/Junior Staff program through which younger Scouts ages 11-13 and a parent can attend a session at R-C and assist in program area of their choice.  It is a great opportunity for a young scout to essentially intern for a session and find out if working at summer camp is a passion that they can pursue over future summers! It is also a great opportunity for young Scouts to bridge over from a young Scout to a role model and leader at camp.  R-C can use Den Chiefs’ support at any of its sessions, so please feel welcome to see what fits on your schedule!

Hello Troop 648,

Please don’t forget to bring all Pancake Breakfast Silent Auction items to the meeting tomorrow night. As mentioned previously, tomorrow, April 23, is your last chance to submit items for the auction to give time to create bid sheets and display sheets.

Those that submit auction items will receive a portion of the final bid amount. These funds will be placed in the Scout’s Troop account. This is a great way to offset Scout-related costs throughout the year.

This weekend we set all kinds of records on the Horton Springs outing – for at least my tenure as a member of  T648.  A whopping 19 backpackers set out under sprinkles in the church parking lot, braving the rain that was sure to come in the mountains (but then never came – if you don’t count a few snow flurries).  We also had a first with an amazing twin set of twins participating in one outing!  It was a bit nip and tuck to pull off that accomplishment, however, as one of the four twins received 10 stitches in the top of his head from Dr. Scoutmaster earlier in the day after suffering a playground wound on the battlefield of Pinnacle High School.  Swinging into the trailhead parking lot where we had planned to camp, it was clear that with a lot full of vehicles, and the challenging logistics of bedding down 19 of us, alternate plans were required.  Mere minutes later, as four vehicles roared up the steep narrow drive of Upper Tonto Campground, the overwhelmed camp host came sputtering up – ‘Just how many of you are there up here?’ Calming him down with camp fees and boy scout uniforms, we had an excellent frosty night.  Awakened by lowing, the boys got early morning exercise mooing back, and performing a short cattle drive back down the hill to the trailhead before breakfast. And oh what a breakfast – I saw chili with beans, teriyaki chicken, beef stew and Pringles – I was expecting to see more breakfast skillet, or eggs and hash for dinner, but no!  It all must have been part of the plan.  Despite all the vehicles in the Horton Trail parking lot, we later still found our traditional amazing secluded campsite available on the other side of the creek, complete with full-sized teepee and rock lawn furniture.  An afternoon of playing Mafia Murder and a four mile excursion to the gushing springs were both spectacular, followed by a roaring fire and less than spooky scary campfire stories.  It would be difficult to have improved much on this perfect outing, except for a few mutterings during ‘Thorns and Roses’ directed toward the 33 degree overnight temps.  Remember that wonderful chilly feeling next week gang, when the temps will surely be triple digits!

The Annual Pancake Breakfast & Silent Auction is only two weeks away! 
I will be at the meeting this Tuesday right at 7 pm to collect auction items.  Please bring everything you have so far along with completed donation forms.  My son is out of town on a school trip so I will only be at the meeting at 7 pm to collect items and won’t be there at the end.It would be very helpful if you could email me a list of what items you’ve collected so far and then bring Tuesday.  Don’t forget the deadline to submit items for the silent auction is Tuesday, April 23.
